N&W 611 tender question
Author: JLW2K

Does anyone know which auxiliary water tender the N&W #611 crew plans to use?  In the 1980's, they used one with a maroon stripe that matched 611's coal tender, but I haven't seen any such tender yet.

Thanks,
James Wright

James,

The maroon stripe auxiliary tender is with Nickel Plate 587 in Noblesville, IN. The tender is no longer painted with the Maroon stripe. I believe N&W 611 will share the auxiliary tender NKP 765 is currently borrowing from the Virginia Museum of Transportation.

I believe the FWRHS is rebuilding their aux. tender for use with 765.  The tender they've been borrowing is supposed to go back to Roanoke for use with 611.

I wonder if VMT should acquire the tender from the Indiana Transportation Museum in Nobelsville, Indiana since they are landlocked and only have roughly 38 miles of track to operate on.  I personally don't think ITM has used it since being landlocked.

I seriously doubt it. The aux tender that really belongs to VMT and J #611, is already all roller bearing and road worthy, especially since NKP 765 has been using it for some years now. The aux tender that actually belongs to the Fort Wayne group and NKP 765, has been up-graded over the winter and should be totally road worthy for this year's upcoming operations, and the VMT's aux tender will be returned.

I thought that tender was sold to the MILW 261 guys?

RPCX 250001 is the VMT tender based in Roanoke.  After NKP 765 finished at CVSR last fall, it was shipped from Fort Wayne to Chattanooga to be readied for the 611 to use, including a fresh paint job.  VMT has graciously offered for the FWRHS to use it again this year if the FWRHS "RPCX 767" A-tank isn't ready in time for use this year, which will probably be the case.  "767" is a nod to the number that the 765 wore in Fort Wayne's Lawton Park for over a decade.

Both tenders, and the one stranded at Noblesville, and the one sold at auction in 1994 to the 261, are all originally L&N Lima-built tenders from the 22 M-1 Big Emma Berkshires of 1949, 1900-series.  RR's 614 has another one or two of them.

So you're saying FWRHS's tank is not likely to be done this year?  What is the nature and the scope of the repairs?

Thanks, Kelly.  I knew the trucks needed some attention, and I remember somebody saying something about adding the locker, was not sure how much other work was needed.  Can you give us a status report on the work?
