NKP 765 this summer
Author: alcoc-430

With all the chatter about #611 (which is awesome news), I have to say that I am REALLY Excited about #765 and the trips out of Allentown and Scranton. Being from NJ, this is the closest she's been here since 1988.

How will they turn 765 at Ashtabula? The only wye tracks include the CSX mainline as far as I know.

Disregard there is a wye with NKP wouldn't need to use CSX

Scranton will definitely be a buzz during railfest 2015!
Keep the nkp whistle on her though.

I can think of another NKP whistle there worth using...

I think they were referring to the tendacy to put whistles from other railroads on 765 when it visits other regions. I am kind of two minds on that. While I think it is a nice gesture, I prefer the sound of 765's whistle to pretty much any other whistle, and you don't quite get the full NKP Berk experience without it.

I agree. The 765's whistle is my personal favorite. With a great low to high "chime" range, it sounds powerful and frantic all at the same time. IMHO.

Rich Melvin puts the best touch on it though. I consider being trackside watching 765 with Rich at the throttle a most exhilerating experience. That other guy they have had recently, not so much.

Yeah, we haven't had any guest whistles on the 765 for the last year or so. We have a policy about "foreign" whistles or whistles from foreign roads where people can still approach us about mounting guest whistles, and it was a nice way to recognize the various anniversaries and heritage railroads we traveled on in 2012.

Thankfully 759 doesn't fall under the category of being from a foreign railroad. I grew up hearing that 759 Horseshoe Curve records blaring in my living room on vinyl, so if there's a chance to hear it again...we'll make it happen.

I agree with you. In fact, just by hearing the "stack" you can tell that its Rich or Gary B at the throttle as both Rich and Gary know the 765 to its core. You then get audible confirmation thru that glorious six chime Nathan. An incredible sound that cannot be matched. IMHO.
