Wonder by the engine slows on curves and then picks up speed on straight aways? Curves were not that sharp.

Those are a couple of places with some history of soft track, especially in the Spring. The crew on the train was all old heads--they know where and when to be cautious for any potential problems, especially with the first trains over the line since last fall. It is a single-chime "hooter," and they were apparently pretty common on the older D&RG narrow gauge engines. Check out the movie "Denver & Rio Grande" or "Ticket to Tomahawk" and you will hear them on those locomotives. In person, 463's whistle is, in my opinion, about the loudest of any of the C&TS locomotive whistles--it will get your attention.
