Steam & Excursion > Waiting Side By Side At Salmonberry In !928- #2539 & #2776!

In the summer of 1928, the small yard and turntable at Salmonberry, Oregon on the Southern Pacific's Tillamook Branch was a busy place.  It was her that helper engines were added to both passenger and freight consists for the climb to the summit at Cochran.

SP engineer H.L. Arey was often assigned to one of these helper engines.  This gave him time to carry along his trusty camera to record the scenes along this scenic line over Oregon's Coast Range.  On this day he has spotted his engine along side of another engine as they wait for their next assignment.

The sun is out and the river is roaring by just to the left of the engines.  A nicer spot to wait isn't to be found be found anywhere.
