I liked that old gal when she was a Q engine.  Not too wild about the silver smokebox, but she had character.  Scored a couple of good cab rides back on the Q trips out of St. Louis..

Even with the abundance of fresh silver (graphite?) she still looks like a working engine.   That is a fine photo.   Nice scan too.

Thanks.  The reasons I like the photo are because she is working:  turning herself and the train and thus the firemen had no trouble making smoke on a cold day.  There is nothing in the background.  And finally, you can see lots of light beneath her.

I see very little "smoke", but LOTS of steam vapor, which is the sign of a very good Fireman.

Lack of smoke from all that vegetable oil.    Oh wait...what year was this, 1965???

That's because the wye at Zearing used a portion of the old IV&N line that once continued north to meet the Ninth Sub (Mendota-Denrock) at Kasbeer. That leg went up and over the main line on a plate girder bridge, thus giving you that nice upward shooting angle and a reason for the 4960 to work a bit.

Here is a wider view (looking east) that I found on the interwebs by searching "Zearing IL photos" Sorry, no info.

Thanks for your comments and for finding that picture.  Too bad the photographer's name was stripped from it.

She'll always be a "Q" engine. Nothing can change that.
