Classic UP 0-6-0
Author: donstrack

Here is a classic UP 0-6-0. This is UP 4461, built by Lima in October 1920, and retired in July 1956. This photo shows it at Beatrice, Nebraska, on April 13, 1954, and comes from the Dean Gray Collection.

I haven't yet taken the time to study UP's fleet of 0-6- steam switch locomotives, other then to count the total: there were 298 of them.

I think this particular style was unique to UP and its OSL and OWRR&N subsidiaries, but I don't yet know the exact numbers. Maybe someone can help.

4439 is a 1918 Baldwin and is in the Traveltown (LA, CA) museum.  It sits near an SP 0-6-0, I always noticed the UP was much bigger; the boiler sits way above the frame!  I think this is because the firebox is actually completely over the frame?  Did not need to have high cornering speed (low C.G) in a switcher anyway, right?

There's one of them there kind of things in Sacramento, perfect candidate for a

I think the SP switchers had larger drivers too.
