Steam & Excursion > D&S 473Date: 08/02/15 18:05 D&S 473 Author: WrongWayMurphy I was on the train about to depart Silverton (fireman Jarrett walking to his 486) and took this last week of the 473 arriving from Durango.
I heard the term "mudhen" bantered about from a foamer in our car - is either the 473 or 486 a "mudhen"? Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/02/15 18:06 by WrongWayMurphy. Date: 08/02/15 18:37 Re: D&S 473 Author: WoodwardEJ Rio Grande had four classes of outside-frame narrow gauge 2-8-2s.
K-27s were the earliest class and acquired the nickname Mudhens. They carried numbers 450 - 464 and produced a nominal 27,000 pounds of tractive effort. K-28s came next and were sometimes called "Sport Models". They carried numbers 470 - 479 and produced a nominal 28,000 pounds of tractive effort. After that came the K-36s, numbered 480 - 489, and producing a nominal 36,000 pounds of tractive effort. Finally class K-37 was produced, using boilers from older standard gauge 2-8-0s to make numbers 490 - 499. They were a bit heavier than the K-36s and produced a nominal 37,000 pounds of TE.
