What would be the actual technical term for a smoke box door? Smoke box door, lol? Have at it: /Mitch Date: 03/21/16 13:37 Re: Whose Am I - non-wheel edition Author: MartyBernard Mitch, I need a hint. Where did you take the photo? Marty

Tell you what, Marty - IF TO member NHIWWRR wants to offer up first letter of the state this smoke box cover is seen above, I'll accept that, and acknowledge his guess as correct, lol. /Mitch Date: 03/21/16 14:07 Re: Whose Am I - non-wheel edition Author: m1bprr Date: 03/21/16 14:14 Re: Whose Am I - non-wheel edition Author: boejoe O.K. Well - I'd like to say: "That's Steamtown's Baldwin #26, now cut it out and let's get back to the first one!", but it's not #26. My guess, confirm if so, would be that each of these smoke box doors today share the same stable. /Mitch Date: 03/21/16 14:32 Re: Whose Am I - non-wheel edition Author: wcamp1472 Just for clarity...
A 'door' has hinges... In these cases, the door is mounted onto the smokebox FRONT. ( Shut the FRONT DOOR! )... W. (What's with the wedge shaped patch on the door in pic #1?) Edited 1 time(s). That's your idea of "clarity"? Lol. OK - I see the obvious now. The smoke box "front" or can we say, "cover", while it does have hinges is not hinged to the smoke box. So - we have a smokebox "front" or "cover" vs the inner plate which is in fact, a smokebox door. > (What's with the wedge shaped patch on the door in > pic #1?) Odd - your question does not show unless I use it as a quote. Interesting observation - the patch. I wonder what the cause was, and when. And if it will remain visible once restored to operation. (there's a hint for you Marty). /Mitch Date: 03/21/16 14:59 Re: Whose Am I - non-wheel edition Author: Mgoldman Bridge60 Wrote:

Looks like we'll need to clarify which smoke box cover (or is it "front") that we are talking about - either way, I do not beleive Ed's pic is #37 and I know it's not the cover for my pic. /Mitch Date: 03/21/16 15:29 Re: Whose Am I - non-wheel edition Author: wcamp1472 The patch 'speculation'...
Might be that cinder cutting has eaten away the area on the inside of the door..... Thus a temporary repair was made by adding a wedge shaped patch to the inside of the door. Rather than replacing the whole door. Sorta looks like a riveted repair, can't see any obvious stick-welding lines in the area... That cinder-cut area inside the door might be quite thin.... Keeping the smokebox vacuum tight is critical to being able to create a strong draft through the firebox....the worn thin area might have flexed too much, weakening the frontend draft. I've seen patches on the smoke box front, where a flue, or two, was extracted and renewed, but never on a door which would be easy to open, if needed for a couple of failed flues. ( One time [1970?] in Baltimore, before a light move to Hagerstown, NKP 759 had a 1958-installed ( safe-ended) flue let go! Had about 225 PSI on her, the back draft immediately smothered the fire, the water shot up the brick arch---washing the rear door sheet, as well as flooded the smoke box and came running back to the grates thru the other, low down tubes---- made a continuous burbling noise, filled the cab with cold steam, fog-like ------ and the coal on the grates was a soggy, wet slurry.... RR jumped in the cab, grabbed the grate's shaker bar and proceeded to dump the 'fire'..... We wondered what all the excitement was about. RR then looked puzzled and soon joined in the laughter.... The soggy, cold coal was now all in the ash pan....Oh, well. We got towed to Hagerstown ( by special move), boilermaker Karal, cut a small circle in the smokebox front, down low, and we fed the tube pieces out the hole, rolled in-place a new, one-piece tube, welded up Joe's hole and soon was ready to GO. Complete with steam-cleaned finger grates! 759 still wears Joe's little patch, to this day...).🙄 W. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 03/21/16 17:01 by wcamp1472. You should've held out longer, Ed! CNJ #113 - Minersville, PA, of course. Moving on.... still looking for the answer to the first smoke box cover! Hint - the locomotive was built new for a railroad in Pennsylvania. /Mitch Date: 03/21/16 17:14 Re: Whose Am I - non-wheel edition Author: Bridge60 I'll stay the course... Reading 1187 at Strasburg?
Date: 03/21/16 17:17 Re: Whose Am I - non-wheel edition Author: Earlk The first smoke box front is rather unusual in that it looks like it was originally on a smaller locomotive, then had a ring installed around the outside to fit it on a bigger boiler. I've never seen a two piece door ring riveted together like that. The added piece used about half as many studs into the smoke box........

I'll add that not was the locomotive made for a railroad in Pennaylvania, but the locomotive IS currently in Pennsylvania as well. /Mitch Date: 03/21/16 18:13 Re: Whose Am I - non-wheel edition Author: NathanaelHancock H&BT #38
