ATSF 2926 Update - April 30, 2016
Author: Cumbresfan

Various projects relating to reinstallation and testing of appliances were continuing while dodging the weather. Repair continued on steam turret cover including replacement of the chain restraints; a new hasp will be welded on next week. The last of the 3-1/2 inch steam pipes from the steam dome to the turret is being insulated and then prepared for reinstalling. The replacement driver brake shoes arrived and fit perfectly. The brake shoe supports continue to be ground to fit the back of the brake shoes. The 26L brake system assembly continues; a BNSF generic graphic shows the spaghetti-like series of lines that go to the various control valves. Other main air brake systems are being tested for function and leaks. A video shows the engine's steam-powered brake-air compressor in action being driven by compressed air. Engine house construction has begun with excavation for footings and rebar ready to receive cement. The photographs show the layout and how tight the shed will fit between the BIA building on the north and the fence on the south. Meanwhile I hear there is a mini-controversy brewing about whether to include cat doors! Our webmaster is donating two small cat doors, but Dr. Mike says there will be enough room under the engine doors for them to squeeze through. Another member says they should be one-way only to keep racoons and skunks out (I don't think that's a worry; we're quite a ways from the Bosque, and there will be no food kept there). Stay-tuned!

I want to mention again our thanks to the Candelaria Foundation for the $10,000 grant we just received to assist as we near completion. And TO readers can help by becoming a member or donating to our efforts.

It's to the immediate right of the photographer. There's enough room between the end of the building and the street for it. See picture #19, 3/19 photos. But no running water.  :>((

What !! ?   Your parts came in, built to the specified sizes. See that proves it can happen.       That is fantastic, of course we knew it would happen that way.

Not exactly, this was a do-over. From the February meeting minutes:
The two old and new brake shoes have been sent back to the foundry. Bob D. says they have received them and hopefully things will be rectified with them soon on the corrected size needed for our engine.

Construction update...my site visit late Friday (6th) afternoon showed footings and stem walls formed and poured, the concrete contractors just leaving.
Supervisor Dr. Mike said pre-fab steel is set to arrive in about two weeks, along with a crane.
Memorial Day celebrations may be extra special for 2926 fans!
Check  next mid-week's work update pics at http://nmslrhs.org/
