Tall Ships & Balloon Stacks -The One That Is Older Is Surprising!
Author: LoggerHogger

The chance to photograph a steam locomotive up next to a tall masted sailing ship was certainly increasingly rare by the mid 20th Century.  However there were a few chances left.

The date is November 1957 and the place is the waterfront in downtown San Francisco.  Visiting the City on this fine day is Virginia & Truckee #12 the "Genoa".  She has been parked along side the newly refurbished Balcutha, a tall ship dating back to 1886.  One would think the Balcutha would be the older of the two but not so.  The Genoa was turned out of the Baldwin factory years earlier for the V&T in 1873.

This scene is still timeless as are the 2 forms of motive power, one by wind and one by steam.

IIRC the Balcutha is constructed of rivited iron plates.
It was open as a tourist/historical display for decades on the waterfront, is it still there?

Yes, it is part of the maritime museum on the Hyde Street Pier next to Fisherman Wharf in San Francisco.  Google Hyde Street Piier for more info.  When I was a kid in the 60's, it was tied up to a pier around where Pier 39 is.

Further rail-related stuff in that maritime display:

One of the SP steam-powered ferries.

EeWP steam tug Hercules, which is being restored to steam.
