The sparkling cab of 844

There's a pic on railpictures purported to be taken on 7/21 that shows the cab of 844 interior. It's #583438 (not my picture to be clear)

Has the cab always had the gigantic 844 emblem on the floor? My frist thought was "good thing that's there or else the guys wouldnt' know what engine they are running."
I'd be curious what those who have experience with this locomotive notice that's different with this most recent rebuild besides the already discussed diesel control.

I believe that is the 3rd floor the DL has installed in 844

Correct.  The floor that was in it in 2010 was the
original floor, installed at Alco in 1944.  The patches
UP put in it in 1946 to cover the stoker chute and
where they welded the grate shaker doors shut
were still very visible. The floor was in good condition.

It just wasn't fancy enough. So a new one was made
out of stainless steel and installed in 2011 or 2012.

That one wasn't shiny enough, so it was replaced
with another new one, this time powdercoated stainless.

That one was replaced by the one you see now, which was
installed a few weeks ago.

So, the first floor was still going strong after 67 years
of service, but the subsequent floors only lasted about
a year each.  Or if you consider how many trips they
ran in 2011, 2012, and 2013, just a matter of weeks or
a few months each.

Go figure.  Just proves the old adage, "They don't make
'em like they used to."

Nice public relations for the many guests who may get a view of the cab. Sounds like a smart move. That's why Union Pacific keeps the Heritage Fleet.

A lot of money in that floor....,.geez the 4449 has the SP emblem painted on the floor....what difference between a class operation that is mostly volunteers vs a very expensive boiler wash

If I recall correctly, doesn't the 4449 have a big SP emblem in the cab floor?
Maybe that is where Ed got the idea.

Yes, but her cab floor is oak, and the SP "sunset logo" is milled into the oak flooring.

He also had the power reverse and some other handles chrome plated, again just like 4449. Too bad he doesn't copy/follow practices from the 4449 crew.

I will bet the inside of the boiler isn't looking as clean as the cab. I have seen any pictures or reports of blow downs being done. But hey the floor is spotless..... In the end i guess that is whats really important.

Didn't he chrome plate the inside of the boiler and have the injector check valves ported and polished?

I guess I'm not the only one conjecturing about the 4449 cab floor influencing the logo on the 844 floor.   Taken at Portland's Train Day 2009.

Why say that? I can understand how 4449 was done and 844 was done, all Ed cares about is making 844 look shiny and clean all the time, not a work horse like all the other steam engines!

Isn't the point of this in part to preserve Union Pacific history? How does replacing the original floor for no reason make sense if you're trying to preserve something for the future? I hope it was saved...

With an oil burner the floor generally takes a pretty good beating as you sand the flues and some of it gets blown on the floor by the draft and walked on. So it will be interesting to see how well this floor holds up under those conditions. We painted the floor with skid proof paint before too.

I would also think that the sloping wood would be a hazard without grip tape. It needs more green paint and less to look like top dollar kitchen cabinetry. It's a step not a slope.

In the picture of the new cab, the woodwork on the left and right side floors, it's sloped to the steel. I did look in Kratville's book just now and the original configuration is pretty much as it appears, so that was my mistake. The picture is from 841 after it was converted to on oil burner.
