AFT arrival in San Jose December 1975 followup
Author: KMiddlebrook

In a followup to the last week's thread...

http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,4078434

These images were taken by my father on an instamatic camera.   The first two are near the Taylor Street overcrossing adjacent to the College Park tower.     In the first, I am picutred as a long haired (and stupid!) teenager getting his first exposure to an operating mainline steam locomotive.   The second shows the party on the observation platform.    Both images show the train running through the College Park and roundhouse area and on toward the depot.

The last image is of the locomotive, alone, crossing the Guadalupe River toward the San Jose display location.

This, along with your previous post, which I heretofore missed, is great!

I was there for the arrival, and the departure in the early morning of December 17, as well (below). Sadly, I did not get a shot of BoilingMan (with hair - that would have been a real collector's item!).

I love all the people waving from the back of the train--a wonderful sight, always.

They would be the local press.  The AFT always picked up the press about an hour out from the display city.

Now, the most interesting one in this photo is the tall guy in the ochre shirt.  I think it's Doug Dorn.  Doug was determined to ride the AFT and talked his way aboard the move to SJ with faked press credentials!
Wrong?  Maybe.  Do I wish I'd thought of it?  Oh defiantly!!
Doug didn't stop there.  He snagged a job with the AFT's concession vendor, waited a few months, an stepped into a job with the AFT itself as an electrician.
His final trick:  Doug was the very last AFT employee.  He lived alone aboard the train in Virginia maintaining the train set until it was sold to Canada about a year after the rest of us were long gone.

Well played Doug!   See you in Portland!

Sadly for me, though SR still could grow hippie hair (in the back, anyway) if he wanted to, my train left that station long ago. He's holding up rather well for a pensioner.
