765 got some changes
Author: Spoony81

The FWRHS had a live Press Conference on Facebook this morning.

765 has temporarily been renumbered 767 for the rest the year. (The number it wore in Lawton Park) and had her Mars Light put back on. The broadcast cut out so I couldn't hear the rest

Update: Here is the story

CVSR will be a good place to get a good look at the NKP "767".

It's 1955 all over again.

Beautiful!  Since she has been "up-dated" to 1955, will the white tires and walkways then be painted over?

1955 would like to have a word with you...

If you check the Lima builders photos of the NKP S-2 engines, you will see white driver tires and running boards.  If you check the Don Wood color postcard of the NKP 763 just out of the Conneaut shop in 1957, you will see white driver tires and running boards.  That is authentic.

They had white tires and running board trim until retirement.

OK, OK! So it is/was "historically correct", but when the locomotive has that nice "work-a-day" appearance, it is a bit hard to see all that gloss white.

BTW, the third and last photo was taken at East Wayne (New Haven, Indiana - a few miles east of Fort Wayne).  The broadside view of the 767 was as the  locomotive was pointed eastbound.  Some of those grain barns are still there, on the north side of the NKP- now NS- yard.

And of course the fabricated bell mount is going back on?
NKP had an ongoing program to replace the cast bell yoke with a fabricated welded design as they had experienced cracking with the castings.
Not all engines got the change. The 759, 765, and 767 did.
The original design from Cleveland called for the fab bracket to be bolted on using the smokebox peripheral bolts but some roundhouse foreman did not like having to drop the bell everytime they opened up the front end so they did some "hacking" to lower it and install bolts specifically for the bracket. If I remember right I think the 759 had this done.

Oh us nitpickers! The engine looks great as it is and besides, it is a big job to put that heavy bell up there as I helped do it once in Bellevue with the 765.
The weight of a bell always kind of stuck with me because as a kid I would take #7 over to Conneaut and walk around the yards and shops until I had to catch the NYC back to Erie about 2pm. One day while walking through the stores I spotted a stack of bells sitting against a block wall and one of the guys said to me " take one home kid". Since I was walking and taking the train that was something I could never figure out to manage.

The engines always came out of the shops with driver tires, running board edges, and headlight step edge painted white.

Random weird question:

Did you have to update UMLER and the aei tag for moving it this summer or can you put a temporary number on them?

Glad to see her in a new appearance!

My guess (and NKP779 and Nathansixchime) can confirm is that the engine is/will be NKP 767 just as it was NKP 765 when they travel. AEI tags and umler entries can be cloned and propagated without much effort or expense.

We considered it, but we'll likely just make her 765 again for the NS deadhead move and 767 back for CVSR. It's actually helped boost ticket sales to add a little variation/buzz on a theme.

I seem to recall the AEI tag has the permanent private-owner ID, RPCX 765, does it not? That may not be the right initials. It doesn't track as NKP. I would assume that reporting mark would be owned by NS. At any rate, NKP is not a private owner mark.

RPCX 765 is correct, owned by FWRHS as a member in the Railroad Passenger Car Numbering Bureau.
