S'more of the UP 9000 on night display, photo shoot.
Author: DonWinslow

I had a little time today so I processed a few more photos of the Rail Giants night photography session 2 weeks ago.I corrected the classification lights to show white instead of green and removed some of the over exposure around the number board.

They are sure nice photo and the steam almost covered the missing jacket. Look at the monstrous counterweight on the main driver. Sure nice the quality of the image was not destroyed with never used white pole pockets.  But did someone who did not know that the ICC never permitted the couplers to be painted so defect cracks could be observed, as this photo makes the coupler look like they were painted black.  That should be removed with a solvent or torch and burned off.  Couplers are never painted. You will see photos of bags over the couplers of engines being painted, steam and diesel.
Thanks for posting these impressive photos of that monster.

I don't see any "white pole pockets". Also, how do you know that they were "never used"? Remember that these 9000 class locomotives were designed and built in the late 1920s and operated through the mid to late 1950s on the UP.

But did someone who did

I suggest that you checkout photos of AT&SF and CB&Q locomotives and passenger equipment, before make such a rash statement!

Don, I for one would like to thank you for taking photos of the 9000 and posting them here. All the engineers I worked with on my district (4th District) attested to their ability to pull very long freights in their time and never slip a driver. Ah for the sounds of a Vinton White album exhibiting the sounds of these three cylindered behemoths working their way up the hills and across the plains. Again thanks and if ever in the Cheyenne area do give a shout.

Hi John, thanks for the note. Yes, those were fun days with the BS Society and the Mayor. We had to put up with GGG but he was easy to ignore. :-)
