I would like to see any locomotive. Perferebly 611 because it has never done excursions on the Rathole... or 765 or 4501.

Didn't they daylight all the tunnels on the "Rathole"?

Yes a lot of the "ratholes" have been daylighted.

The question is why couldn't it happen? Well, first, NS would need a good reason to do so. Anything is possible. Pretty sure 611, 1218 and 765 all ran on the Rathole in years past.

Doesn't the city of of Cinncinati, OH technically still own the Rathole mainline all the way to Chattanooga with NS leasing the right of way? I am definitely sure an excursion needs to work around NS's scheduled operations since it is a very busy line.

Perhaps not in the current era, but 611 and many others, ran the rathole numerous times during the original NS Steam Program.

A little nostalgia trip thru THIS SLIDE SHOW will show a number of 611 images, including aerials, running the rathole.

The photos in this show are from a number of photographers. The 611 aerials were all shot on October 22, 1988.

The dates on the photos are not necessarily the dates they were taken, but may represent the latest upload date.

Runtime is seven minutes plus. Show is known to play in Firefox & Chrome though the coding is a bit old. Also contains an embedded soundtrack, which you can mute if you don't care for Cream or Eric Clapton, which I used for the music.

630 did trips on the Rathole in 2014. So that shows chances of another steam locomotive to return.

At least four left, two north and two south of Oakdale, Tennessee.  They have super clearance, about 20 by 30 feet as I recall.  Southern Railway did a major rebuilding of the "Rathole" in the early 1960's.
