#4 and #5 show blowdowns, I believe.

#4 doesn't, as that is just leftover steam vapor from a previous blowdown attempt. Now, #5 is definitely a blowdown, but how long of a blowndown is purely speculative.

Yuh know, you want volume and velocity, seperator kinda stifles that a little but that's not
much of a blowdown.

Nice series! Good view of the Big Muddy. That has always been a flood prone area.

#4 was a blowdown I shot the photo as it stopped, I seen them do 2 blowdowns and one when they stopped at Dexter where thay stayed over night, they ran track speed all day 50-60 mph,

Jack, I do realize that the #4 picture was either the beginning or the end of a blowdown and I thank you for the correction.

My main thought on taking note of these two blowdowns is that pictures of any blowdowns on the current 844 are like pictures of "Big Foot".

Just one correction: the Big Muddy River bridge is Aldridge, Illinos.  There was a town there at one time, but it is now one of many in the area to have vanished.  The book "Ghost Towns Of Southern Illinois" is a treasure trove of information, and several locations along this line are covered.

Halsey is just a railroad name for the junction nearby where the single track returns to double south of the river.  There was a town south of the junction, La Rue, which is where the next road to the south got the name La Rue Pine Hills Road.  You guessed it: another ghost town.

The north end of the single track is Howardton Junction, and while there are still a couple of houses there isn't much left of the town of that name.

The Oakwood Bottoms area between Howardton and Gorham was home to the line side town of Johns Spur, of which there is no trace today.

Great shots, by the way.

It seems we were shadowing each other from Union County to Scott City.  With a high resolution version of #1, I could probably see my truck on the North Levy in the distance.  We went up the gravel road into the Union County Wildlife Area there at Reynoldsville, and I dropped of Kurt at that same road west of Scott City (final shot on the video I posted a few days ago).  I went a couple of miles further, but as it turned out right after passing you they entered a slow order that made my final shot a bit of a yawnfest.
