CNW 4-6-4 wb at Mt Vernon IA in 1940,s!
Author: slacks

One of my favorite prints I acquired a few yrs ago is this shot of wb psgr train crossing HGW 1 in Mt Vernon IA probably in the 40,s. I live only 2 miles from this spot and can say the house is still there and the mainline now UP is still going strong but now it,s Z trains running 70 mph by.

Thanks for posting this. The past as caught on film helps flesh out history.

Wow! How fast do you think it was going? I would say that it was on you in less than a second.

Thanks for sharing.

Three rail lengths (39x3) per second = 79 mph.  Probably about right.

Bill Kuba photo Slacks?

My grandpa was a CNW Trainmen the time the streamliners were on there(pre 1955). One time he and my Uncle Bill, who was probably 8 years old, got a cab ride from Clinton to Cedar Rapids. They went 90 mph most of the trip and my grandpa said the engineer even pushed the needle towards 100 mph before the ATC alarm went off.

Thanks for sharing this exciting cab ride story.
From your story , could the ATC cab control alarm been set for 95 mph ?

I love photos like this.

This locomotive was very similar to the The Milwaukee Roads Hiawatha F-7 4-6-4s.  They both had 300 psi boilers and 84" drivers so in the right spot they both could easily do 100mph plus.   They ran one of the Hiawatha 4-6-4s on a stationary dino at the Alco factory, up to 120mph.   They were reputed to have done the same, on the tracks.   Wouldn't that have been fun to watch ?
