Steam & Excursion > Mainline Steam in Germany Day 1Date: 03/12/17 12:58 Mainline Steam in Germany Day 1 Author: cp1400 Once or twice per year German tour company IGE sponsors steam hauled tours in various parts of Europe. From February 25 to March 2, 2017 they toured in mostly East Germany using 11 different steam engines from six different engine classes. The tour generally tries to use secondary lines without wires but will run fast in electrified territory where necessary.
On Saturday Feb 25, day 1, the tour went from Nuremberg to Chemnitz via Hof and Schwartzenburg. Highlights included a climb up the Schiefe Ebene plus a top and tail trip over the spectacular Markersbacher Viaduct. I had the opportunity to chase this tour all six days. I will be posting highlights of each of the six days. I hope everyone enjoys steam on the mainline from Germany.

Near Wiesenburg the train rolls through the countryside. cp1400 Date: 03/12/17 13:02 Re: Mainline Steam in Germany Day 1 Author: cp1400 6. Departing Schwarzenberg the train is set up top and tail for the light bridges on this line. Here they are climbing through Raschau-Markersbach.
7. Over the spectacular Markersbach Viaduct east of Schwarzenberg. 8. Reset as double headed, the train departs Schlettau for Chemnitz and the end of day 1. Thats it for day 1. More to follow in the coming days. cp1400 Date: 03/12/17 13:18 Re: Mainline Steam in Germany Day 1 Author: GPutz WOW! Thank you. Gerry

I can, of course, translate using Google. But....do the tour guides speak English? Is any accomadation made for non-German speaking travelers? Thanks.
