The worst photo of a steam locomotive ever published on TO...

... but no one else has posted anything better to document D&NE 28's second fireup last Saturday and Sunday at Duluth on the North Shore Scenic Railroad.

She was up to about 20 psi when I snapped this, and she was able to sound her whistle a few moments later. Later in the day she went out to stretch her legs, to Lester River and back.

Dont sell yourself short. She has a fire in her so that in itself makes it a lot better than a picture of one that is cold.

Good question, and I don't know. I'm with you, and I've asked the question. I was told that it is paint that will not hide pregnant fractures.

FRA has not objected.

I was wondering that also. Maybe they do not have the $$$ to get them chromed like UP has......:)

Just my opinion but, the vast majority of FRA inspectors involved with ANY of today's steam locomotives, are only interested in boiler and boiler practices. I bet you couldn't find an FRA steam inspector today that knows ANYTHING about running gear dimensional requirements.

This reminded me of a time, many years ago, when I was at the Sierra Railway. The #28 was getting an FRA inspection and there were two inspectors. One was an older guy who may even have been retired (I can't recall) and a younger, new guy, whom he was showing the ropes. The new guy took exception to the way something was riveted and pulled out a citation book and was about to start writing it up when the older guy gently pushed the new guys pen hand away and said, "Let it go. It's lasted a hundred years like that, it's fine".

I have yet to see any video clips of either of 28's break in runs. Are there any out there to be found yet?

Prototype. DMIR used white; DNE silver, on such parts
