She Is Certainly No Thing Of Beauty But She Got The Job Done!

While most steam locomotives could claim to have some amount of style and flair to their design there were all too many that simply were built with their purpose in mind and no attention was paid to making her pleasing to the eyes. Here is an example of one such engine.

This photo was taken on the Oakland docks in the 1930's on the Howard Terminal RR. Here we see HT 0-4-0T #2 at rest between assignments.

When ALCO built #2 in 1912 they had little time or reason to try and make this workhorse anything but functional. Perhaps the single style cue given this tank engine was the curve added to the top of her fuel bunker. After that, she is all business.

After all, wasn't that what she was built for?

That is the longest arm that I have ever seen for activating the whistle.

Yes and judging from the construction of that "whistle" it didn't help the sound any either.
