Steam & Excursion > 844s whistleDate: 04/29/17 11:00 844s whistle Author: upheritage6 yesterday my friends and I were debating about the whistle that's on 844. He was saying the whistle that was on it yesterday wasn't the original whistle. He mentioned how it seemed to be positioned much higher than it used to be. And that the piping to it was different. He also showed me many shots where the original whistle is brass. And this one was black. He pointed out there is a difference in pitch. His theory was that the crew put 4014s whistle on it for a trial? Maybe we are hearing 4014s whistle? What do you guys think?

Being really into Sound, and a Recording Musician years B4 railfannig, I Notice 844's whistle soundeded different on one of the videos posted here by a member a few days ago, but I thought it was because of the cold weather at said video's location? I Noticed a kind of Higher or (sick?) sounding Pitch at the very beginning of each toot!?.. Jim Baker Riverside, CA Date: 04/29/17 12:50 Re: 844s whistle Author: upheritage6 RailRat Wrote:

Date: 04/29/17 13:08 Re: 844s whistle Author: RailRat And here it is, had to go back and watch again, I must revise my earlier comment about the sound however, and just say that it sounds different on this video than in other videos, and different than I remember, might need to hear from eye-witnesses, because sometimes the original sound can be "colored" with digital artifacts from the recording device and or the uploading/encoding process. I notice that sometimes after uploading my converted VHS videos, probably caused by something in my own conversion process here at home..But I must also add that any original digital audio/video is much more accurate, even after uploading.

This whistle is on UP 814 stuffed & mounted in Council Bluffs,IA.

It seems as though either something in the piping or a valve was used to suppress the steam flow for years, as during the 80's through 2010 or so the whistle wasn't as loud and the tone was more mellow. It strikes me as the same whistle, but being blown harder.

If all he wants all the time is the loudest he can make it, that's what he'll get. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 04/30/17 23:40 by Realist. I would add to realist's comment, and say that not only the finess of each hogger's blow of the whistle, but also the timing of short or long intervals between blows, under normal, non emergency operating conditions, would kind of give away who is hogging an engine. This might possibly explain the different sound of 844's same old whistle, with a different engineer than most of us are used to hearing in the past?..or both new engineer AND different whistle??? The thought occurred to me of having them leave me and my camera by the tracks, but it was just too hot. I heard the low moan of the U.P. trains whistling through town from the comfort of the swimming pool that hot afternoon. Eugene Crowner |
