Author: DTWilson

When the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad first started operation in 1989 they hired a designated operator that had his own equipment to operate the line between Cumberland and Frostburg, MD

Jack Showalter operated the Allegany Central with his cars and his two locomotives, ex. CP G5C #1238 and G5D #1286

During the Allegany Central period, I worked for the Cumberland Times News as a photographer working three 12 hour shifts Friday thru Sunday leaving me the whole week to do other things... well other things was working for the Allegany Central as a locomotive Fireman 3 days a week, 2 trips a day.

Also during this period CSX still serviced an industry in Cumberland using the former WM tracks at MD Junction along with storing cars in the former yard at Ridgeley.

On two separate occasions CSX derailed trains in MD Junction preventing us from turning our locomotive on wye there. In those situations, CSX would send a yard crew to the station and take us to the Cumberland shops to turn the locomotive on the turn table there. The yard crew would also help spot our train. pulling it clear of the station so when we returned all we had to do was couple onto the headend.

Jack's other engine, ex. CP G5d #1286 required rebuilding before it ran at Cumberland. Some scenes from in the former WM Car Shop at Ridgeley, WV

After rebuilding, the #1286 would run doubleheaded with the #1238 on a series of trips.

Nice photos, thanks for sharing them with us as I remember the initial operations myself and enjoyed a trip over the former Western Maryland. However, I was told that Jack only owned the locomotives and that he leased the passenger cars from other sources.

The #1238 on the former C&P tracks crossing over the former Western Maryland Railway. The former WM roadbed is now part of the GREAT ALLEGHENY PASSAGE...

Only the two N&W coaches, "The Lightweights" as we called them were leased. The Red Coaches and later 2 ex. VIA coaches along with a handful of ex. Army hospital cars were owned by Jack.

In the first photo of Jack Showalter (the one showing him in the engineer's seat), what is that lever on the floor next to the seat? Grate shaker or something?

That's correct. The #1238 carried two injectors. Normally the Fireman's side would be started soon after crossing the Bridge over Rt. 40 in the Narrows and with feathering could remain on the rest of the trip. Larger trains / More Steam usage would require the Engineer's side injector to be used occasionally.

Thanks so much for these photos! I remember riding behind these locomotives in the late 1980's/early 90's!

Thanks for posting these.
Great coverage. That was a long time ago, and I had forgotten about these steamers being in use there.
