Well yes, that IS that "back of the firebox", but that "opening" in the fire door. The coal from the stoker would come upwards from below, to the distributing table and then be blown, by the steam jets, into the fire.

So when the flue tubes are serviced/replaced and the stoker is removed and the oil burner installed. . .

That's all accessed from below??

Or will their be part of the back firebox wall removed to gain access. . .perhaps from around the fire door?

No, as the tubes and superheater units are all removed from the front, i.e. through the smokebox.

No. See answer above.

I do understand that the flue tubes are removed through the front -- but don't they have to be unwelded or maybe drilled out in the firebox before they can be removed through the front? Will the welders that do that access that area from the bottom?

It looks to me that crawling through the firebox door might be a bit tight. . .

Yes, now that all the grates and grate supports have been removed

Yes, the "bigger folks" have a tough time going through the fire door opening.

Construction Dates?
Author: Lightning_Slinger

Thanks for posting this video.

According to the book "A History of Union Pacific Steam," the builder plate on 4014 should be #69585, November 1941. In the video the builder plate shows number 69572, September 1941, which the book lists as 4002's builder plate. (4002 was dismantled November 1961.)

Anyone know what is correct, or if the builder plates may have been switched due to theft of the original plates?

Eddy

4014's original builder plate was stolen when it arrived in California in January 1962. Using an original plate for another Big Boy, a new plate was cast and put on 4014 ( http://utahrails.net/up/heritage-fleet-steam.php ). I read somewhere that UP intends to have a duplicate plate cast for 4014.
