838 and 844(4) in 1977

In 77 I was in the Army and stationed at Ft Carson, Co. At least once, I made a trip up to Cheyanne to check out the Steam engines on the UP. At this time, the 3985 was on display close to the depot.

Inside the roundhouse were ten wheeler #1243, 2-10-2 #5511 and 4-8-4's 838 and 844(4). Here's a shot I grabbed of the two with my trusty old Spotmatic-F. Honestly, I can't remember which one is which.

I've seen some recent shots of the 838 and she is looking pretty picked over when compared to how she looked in 77. At that time, it was hard to see much difference between the two.

Nice photos of the 838 and 844. Too bad the entire Cheyenne roundhouse is not still standing full of steam locomotives. I've had a thought that it would be amazing if UP rebuilt the complete Cheyenne roundhouse, and filled it with UP steam locomotives from around the country that are sitting in parks. Nice dream anyway. They did it once with the 4014. As for which is which in the photos, I would say the 844 is on the right, as you can see the square Worthington injector pump hanging above the drivers. The 838 has the original Sellers injector, different look.

When I came to the UP in 1976 all but 7 of the 48 stalls still stood.
