In The Days Before She Became Famous She Just Sat Waiting!
Author: LoggerHogger

The fortunate few steam locomotives that have been preserved and restored to operation in these modern times all had working careers that were usually far different than the limelight they enjoy today. Here is one such engine.

Here working career is over in the quarry at Logan, California by October 1965 when this photo was taken. Granite Rock appears to have been literally pushed aside on a siding to gather dust as she awaits her fate.

Built by the Porter Locomotive Works in 1942 for the U.S. Army as #5001 she went to the Granite Rock Company in 1947 where she worked for the next many years. When her work for them was done she was stored as we see here for many more years. Finally 1n 1995 the stocky 0-6-0T was donated to the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento where she was returned to operation in 1997.

Who could have known what spit and polish fame #10 would enjoy in later years if they saw her like this in 1965?

Passengers on the SP Coast Daylight could see No. 10 if they were looking out the window on that side (geographic east).
Logan is between Watsonville Jct. and Gilroy, California.
You can imagine the surprise of a certain 15-year old when he saw it, totally unexpectedly, on his first trip on the Daylight in about 1960.
As unbelievable in 1960 to still have daily passenger trains as to have No. 10 stored safe and serviceable.

A few years ago I very much enjoyed a cab ride in her down along the river at the CSRM.
