Although the morning runby was canceled, they did do one in the afternoon much to the delight of my nephews and brother-in-law. Date: 06/17/17 16:48 Re: 765 Loud and Proud at Mokena Author: mdogg It was a fantastic day. A Lima Berk well above 40 mph and open vestibules! Hard to beat that in today's world. She looked and sounded incredible.
Yes, the morning run by at Tinley had to be cancelled, but they backed her out of the station and did a mini-runby! Excellent job as usual by FWRHS,and a special thanks to Metra! Did I mention how good a Lima Berk with perfectly-timed Baker valve gear sounds at high speed!!! Wow. And tomorrow I do it again , both chasing and riding. So I'm hearing that the gear is in perfect timing. It sounds slightly off-beat to my musical ear, but no matter. It's great. John. Date: 06/18/17 08:17 Re: 765 Loud and Proud at Mokena Author: HotWater Just returned home from watching her pass Mokena. She sounded PERFECT, although there might have been an inexperienced Fireman, as there was quite a bit of heavy black smoke when approaching including the lifting of the safety. Luckily the safety re-seated just prior to all the folks with video cameras, and didn't drown out that fantastic Lima & Baker Valve Gear exhaust at speed.
Thanks to the Fort Wayne group for a fine outing! Date: 06/18/17 09:43 Re: 765 Loud and Proud at Mokena Author: wcamp1472 R.R. Jr.
...Ross, She carries the Geisler Engineering Bell. [ full size replica of 1910 PRR loco Standard Bell...] With the help of Ron & Keith , we bought that in 1974, ( weekend of Nixon's 'Saturday Night Massacre' ) while manning a display table at the Live Steamers Meet , Southwick , Masschusetts. We mounted it on the 759 for the AFT "Press Trip", ---- Hoboken to Scranton & Ret.., later that summer... That 759 departure from Hoboken is in a early recording of the 4449 & AFT.. It's ringing, and echoing across Hoboken Terminal, very clearly on that sound track.. So, it's been on both the 759, and now loaned to 765.. It's ONE LOUD bell... Nicely shined, too. Thanx... W. It's amazing to think that they could do that speed with 80-some cars of loaded freight. No wonder they called one of those speed-demon, regular freights: " The Flying Saucer" on the Nickel Plate...
