ATSF #2921 Move Status
Author: lynnpowell

I checked out the ATSF 2921 in Modesto this morning. A contracted crew of about eight men were on site working. The fence and weeds around the locomotive have been removed, creating a nice wide-open photo opportunity for a morning shot. I haven't been able to get a photo like this of the locomotive for 35 or more years! A worker on the scene told me that they have to have the locomotive ready to move by the first of July.

Another sad looking locomotive. Where is it going and will it be at least cosmetically restored?

They are waiting on your funds to do the restoration.

As to where? TO has an excellant search feature.

The grand plan as I understand it is to move the 2921 next to the ATSF (BNSF) Stockton Sub mainline near the Modesto Amtrak Station -MOD amtrak code (far east suburban Modesto).
This was the former ATSF Valley Division mainline.

Your last photo is fantastic! She looks great!
Really! That is such a beautiful setting for her,
but too close to the river, and, from what I have
read, not a good part of town.

I am glad she will be going to the Modesto Amtrak
station, where more people will see her, and
where she will no longer be in danger of being
flooded. And thank you very much for the info
about the deadline for the move. I hope the move
goes well. (Wonder if there are any plans to do
a cosmetic restoration on her?)

She is one very impressive locomotive!

The UPS guy is going to be pissed when he gets a pickup notice for that! Nice to
see it going to somewhere that's not going to be under water in the near future!

How about moving it to Castle AFB and park it next to the B-36? Would be quite a dynamic duo. A good, safe place for it to reside and be seen.

I love the super long tenders Baldwin built for these fast beasts!

I never noticed before but MONSTER firebox on the 2921.
It looks like a UP Big Boy or Challenger Firebox.
Baldwin certainly built these locomotives for the ages !!

Glad to hear there's still a B-36 around ....

Also, for an engine of this size and weight, not to mention its speed capabilities, the rods look surprisingly light!

Thank you for the great photos. I didn't know that this locomotive even existed until this topic sparked up. The fence is always a total buzz kill at Dennis The Menace Park in Monterey!
