Loggers in the highball days of steam logging always had one major enemy, and that was fire. One stray spark during the hot summer months could literally burn the very timber resource that the company depended on for it's existence. High in Oregon's Coast Range in 1918, Southern Pacific Railroad engineer, H.L. Arey has taken his Sunday off with his trusty camera to capture this image in his home town of Timber, Oregon. Arey is intrigued with the spark arrestor that the chief mechanical officer of the Sunset Logging Company has designed and installed on their 2-truck Shay #8. Given the fact that #8 was built as on oil burner it is interesting that the CMO saw the need for such a huge and complicated spark arresting system. We can only speculate today if this apparatus worked to reduce flying sparks and how much it impeded the drafting of the engine.
