41yrs ago today?
I was with the AFT (Asst Curator). The train was displaying at the Army depot across the river from Harrisburg, PA. Early that morning fellow AFT employee Rubin & I caught the Broadway Ltd for NYC to see the Tall Ships come up the Hudson River. It was quite a sight (and it rained like hell!!)
It took us all night to get back to the AFT- we were up for over 24hrs- a long fun day I won't likely forget!

Not a steady rain, but some wild downpours!
Here's a photo- 41yrs ago this afternoon in NYC.

I'm writing this from aboard our boat, the Marika Paige, in the Santa Barbara Marina- they'll launch the fireworks from West Beach tonight. The Marina is filling up fast- these are the best seats in town!
Happy 4th everyone!

4449 was in Birmingham, AFT 1 was on the point of the AFT in Pennsylvania, and 610 was back in the barn in Texas.

As for myself, I was in Hannibal Missouri. BN 1776 was on display for the bicentennial and my folks took me to see it. I have pix from my instamatic around here somewhere ....

Was the AFT 1 re-painted black at this point? Or just a very dark blue? It sure looks black in these pictures.

Dark blue cab, boiler, and tender.
Black engine (running gear) and smoke box. The smoke box was lagged, so the color simply changed on the jacket at the right place.

Jeeze Steve...I was at the Tall Ships sailing up the Hudson too. I was just north of the GW bridge where they turned back south. For the life of me I don't remember rain,or even dismal weather, but you have the photographic proof right there! You didn't photoshop that in,did you???? Lol

I don't know NYC well enough to know where we were- it was an abandoned elevated structure of some sort. I think it was a road, not a railway.
The rain chased us off- nowhere to stay dry!

... and a presidential seal on the tender meticulously hand-painted by Bob Lorenz!

..". and a presidential seal on the tender
> meticulously hand-painted by Bob Lorenz!"

Oh, God...I hope not!!!

There is a distinct difference between the Great Seal of the United States from the presidential Seal.

What's on the tender is the Great Seal of the United States, not the presidential Seal
Did we learn nothing from the Watergate Break-in and the cover-up, the articles of impeachment, the capitulation?
( and, disgustingly, the 'pardon' before the finding of a 'crime'....." pardoned for any crime he might have committed, or any crime he might commit in the future"..
These words will come back to haunt us in the future..." I'll resign, if I get what Nixon got..." soon will be the bargiaing chip...Mark my words..)

Lorenz did the Great Seal ( two times) on the tender....
The same Seal as on the dollar bill...

The AFT became a success because it celebrated AMERICA, the Nation's History, not the president, he's simply an executive, charged with running
the executive branch of the 3, co-equal, branches of our gummint .... he is not the imperial head of anything....

A bit of AFT Blue trivia:
The 4449 & trainset were painted a lighter "Pepsi" blue. (Pepsi being a major, and the initial sponser of the AFT).
The 2101 was a much much darker blue.
In the Summer of '76 it was decided the train should be repainted for its showing in Washington DC. Someone mixed up the paint codes and the first paint delivered was the 2101's dark blue. As a result, two cars, the 20&33 (later the 33&34), were painted with this color on one side only. This was never corrected and these two cars carried that darker "T-1" blue all the way to Miami.
A nice authentic touch for anyone modeling the train...
