The gauge shows the maximum test pressure in the boiler which is 125 percent of maximum authorized operational pressure (290 pounds). The maximum pressure of 290 lbs. is lower than original specification of 300 lbs. as a result of new ASME regs.

Please explain what "new ASME regs." have to do with FRA regulations pertaining to hydrostatic testing of locomotive boilers, including calculations of the FRA Form 4.

ASME Regs and especially Form 4 are way over my head. Suggest you contact them directly:

Only crossover point between the two might be in "safety factor" which is a part of the ASME code
and is also in the FRA regs.

Thinking about the open house in late September, it would be nice to see it steamed up for that.

That would be nice but likely impractical for a number of reasons. Our siding has very confined conditions with close passage on either side of the engine and a hot engine under steam would require a safety zone and member patrol to avoid burns, especially with many small children in attendance. Also, cab tours are a big hit and would require careful attention. I know other organizations do it (765 in Chicago recently but only for short periods measured in minutes), but at a daylong event with a large crowd safety becomes a much larger issue. Also, before firing all the superheaters need to be installed and fire brick placed in the fire box.

Indeed that is apparently the case. I received word this afternoon that the society purchased the same size (thickness) tubes and flues specified in the original SF engineering drawings. However with a newer increased ASME safety factor we would have needed thicker gauge metal to run at 300 lbs. This was revealed during the Form 4 calculations according to the CMO. In practicality a ten pound reduction should matter little as it is very unlikely we will run as fast or pull as heavy a load as the engine did when in service.
