Steam Injector Parts stolen from the Sierra Railroad
Author: africansteam

Please be advised that the following items were stolen from the Sierra Railroad shop at Jamestown, CA. The theft is believed to have taken place late in the afternoon on July 13th.

1. One spare used injector less handles The injector is a size 8 which is going to fit most small to average size steamers.  Disposal on eBay or in a private setting would be very easy as stuff like this is priceless.

2. A complete steam valve assembly. The steam valve assembly has a new custom fitted thread to the worn thread of the yoke casting.

3. One start valve along with a water control valve handle.

The photos show the steam valve assembly and the steam nozzle.

Note the small brass pin in the handle to secure the crank.  Also, easy to spot is the all new bronze spindle visible as a golden color next to the disk nut at the right end of the assembly.

The steam cone has the factory markings still stamped into the hex flat.

Additional photos to come after I return from vacation next week.

The thief had to know just what he was getting as he took the correct parts to make a complete injector.  He also snagged a new steam cone as it was right there and would fit into a pocket easily. The interior of the injector is well used and has never been touched since it was taken our of service long ago.  Even if the thief has no skills in the rebuilding of injectors but could clean the outside and install the handles making it look like a good condition injector.

I hope they get the items back safely and the people behind the theft get their hands cut off.

That's absolutely terrible .....
Has all the ear-marks of an 'inside job'.
Typically the 'perp' is known to the principals ....

The proof is hard and the legal remedy too light to be a deterrent....

These are very vital,parts....
It's so sad, and happens too often.

Are there any other locos that these parts would work on?
My presumption is that the injector application is very much engine-specific...

Sad.

Looks to be Nathan Monitor Injector parts.

I know the Sierra used them on the 3, 28 and the 34.

In the summer of 2012, thieves broke into ATSF 2926's siding and stole over 1000 lbs. of heavy steel parts that had been disassembled and stored on the ground. Included were vintage locomotive parts like the radial-buffer (a shock-absorbing assembly between the locomotive and tender), some giant "wish-bone" brake rod assemblies, half the cab-mounting brackets and more. The culprits were never caught and replacement parts had to be hand made including using borrowed parts from the Pueblo, CO sister engine as templates. It was estimated that replacing the parts by hand set back restoration by a year and cost many thousands of donated dollars. None of the engine "jewels" (bell, whistle, etc.) were stolen as they were locked up in shipping container storage units. After that security was greatly increased so that we have had only had one break in and the intruder escaped without taking any items as security arrived.

Oh if only there is a special extra-hot corner of hell for such thieves of history; no different than grave robbers
