She Has The Sad Task Of Carrying Away Her Fallen Predecessors!

The Northwestern Pacific Railroad that ran north of the Bay Area into the Redwoods of Northern California was long known for its varied standard gauge steam motive power. However, many folk forget that much of the early NWP was actually narrow gauge.

The NWP was originally formed by merging several predecessor roads that had various gauges into one. This left many mile in Marin County as 3-foot gauge up until the 1930's when they were upgraded to standard gauge.

The narrow gauge steam motive power of the NWP slowly began to gather in the Tiburon yards until 3 were present there by 1933. These fine little engines were kept in storage there for a few years in the hopes that buyers could be found. Unfortunately no buyers appeared and this fleet of narrow gauge steamers slowly was dismantled.

In this fine photo we see NWP 0-6-0 #231 as she pushes a pair of flat cars laden with the remains of one of her narrow gauge sister engines #94 that has just been dismantled. In the second photo we see the pieces of #94 being loaded by NWPMW #41 crane.

Soon the flats will be loaded onto one of the waiting car ferries and will take then across the Bay to a train that will take them to one of the Bay Areas scrap yards. There, we will see the final internment for this piece of California narrow gauge history.

This brings up the question on the NWP ng line towards Tomales bay, are any of the tunnels still left? If so, which ones?

Three narrow gauge engines went to Tiburon in 1934 (the only 3), nos 90 (ex NPC 15), 94 (ex SPC) and 95 (ex NPC 18). They had last run in 1929 (95) and 1930 (90, 94) and were towed out of Pt. Reyes on flatcars by #112 AFTER the Pt. Reyes Branch was abandoned. All were scrapped in 1935. The tender in Martin's photo looks as if it may match that on #94 (pictured); it does not for nos 90 (no herald) or 95. No. 90 was scrapped first in July 1935, the others towards the end of the year.

I don't believe the tunnels remain, but part of the ROW is a bike trail, the depot in Pt. Reyes is the post office, and as you drive north, you will find traces of the ROW along the shoreline, and some bridge supports, you can follow it at least to the village of Tomales. A lot remains even after all these years!
