Your Perspective Can Change Depending On The View You Choose!
Author: LoggerHogger

We all have seen nearly countless roster shots of Southern Pacific 4-6-2's over the years. These are handsome engines when viewed from the normal "from the ground" angle. However change that angle and you get an entirely new feeling for these engines.

Gene Kille decided to capture SP #2419 in the Yards at Bakersfield from a slightly different angle in 1938 when he took this fine photo. By climbing up on a higher perch he was able to not only capture the workings of #2419 but also the railroad environment in which she worked on a daily basis.

While the Pacific was the main focus of his photo, just look at the additional details he was able to save for us by shooting from this angle. Well done Mr. Kille.

All the extra details make this fascinating.

Speaking of Details -- What are the two safety valve looking items just above the front of the Running Board?
My thanks in advance, I'm stumped.

Jim,

Those are governors for the air pumps.

But the air pumps are on the engineer's side of the engine.

So? The number 2 main reservoir is on the Fireman's side.

Aren't the Air Pump Governors plumbed to be between the pumps and the steam source?

OK, I did some quick research and now I do NOT believe those are the governors for the air pumps. I have found those same two "fittings" even on MT class Mountains, and I now believe those are the two separate external steam (or air) supplies for the blower and atomizer, for when firing up a cold locomotive. All the air pump governors I found are located quite close to the air pump/pumps and mounted on top a a large steam supply line feeding the air pump/pumps.

Two very old rules of photo composition:

-- A low angle emphasizes the subject.

-- A high angle emphasizes the environment in which the subject appears.
