Steam & Excursion > RBM&N 425 - Speed Along the Schuylkill

On Sept. 30th, 2017, for the 5th year annual year, RBM&N 425 pulled excursions in conjunction with the town of Schuylkill Haven's "Borough Day." The trips ran from Schuylkill Haven to Kernsville Dam, for a round trip of about 30 miles. The 425 put on a show for three trips, Enjoy!

Great Video, makes one feel as if he is riding the train. Nothing like a steam train for sure. Thanks for sharing with all of us.

I appreciate the roaring hot fire....nice clean-to-light-gray stack...

Train size is optimal for power-running: provides enough drag for a strong throttle, valve gear nicely hooked-up, superheat near MAX.

Such running burns most of the coal, the superheater keeps most of the water in the boiler .....short cut-off has the hot steam doing the “expansive work”.
Pops up every once in a while tells everybody the he’s got the firing task well in-hand...
Fire is consistently thin throughout the video...

Nice, thin firebed, with a heavier bank across the back, under the firing table and deep in the rear corners.
He’s burning more air than coal— that’s what makes for a white hot fire . The thin bed assures plenty of air for complete combustion well over the arch...

At the start of the day, it takes about 10 to 15 minutes of early, yet smooth, running before the brick arch gets hot enough to start to glow red!!!
It’ll be a little “smoky” in the beginning, then as the arch heats-up, you’ll be at about 3,000 deg firebox flame temps....You’re burning every ounce of carbon down to CO2.....a clear, colorless gas...
Now you’re screaming...I love it!

At the end of the day, he’ll have a wheel barrow full of ashes to clean out.....
That’s the away to do it...

Its alive, its alive! Great video, nice attractive train and a great little engine. I always marvel at what a talker the 425 is for her size. Reminds me of my favorite girl.

If I recall correctly from previous posts, the diesel is for pulling the train back, as there is no turning facility at the "other end of the line".

Another thing to point out is that 425 is a hand bomber. They do all that clear stack hard charging firing by scoop shovel....
