Murder on 844 excursion — Longmire novel
Author: Copy19

I just finished reading the latest Longmire novel by Craig Johnson titled “The Western Star”. It has all the elements of Agatha Christie’s famed who-dunnnit “Murder on the Orient Express”.

Johnson said writing about history, guns and cars, and now probably trains, are something that authors can usually count on to give them grief. He said he did talk to Cathy Norris of BNSF who introduced him to Union Pacific retiree and historian in Cheyenne when he researched the book.

I’m a Longmire fan. It’s a read. Keep in mind it is fiction. :—)

Ummmmm....John..... Please -- rename this thread.

Not everyone is going to know that you are quoting
the title of a novel, and that "Longmire" is an
author, and not a place. I certainly didn't. And
it has been proven over and over that very few people
now read books, especially the younger generation, so
I am pretty sure most people reading your thread
title would also not recognize that you are quoting
the title of a book and the author's name.

Thanks!

I read and have read and enjoy Longmire's books and TV series. He did an earlier volume involving a diesel that could have used a good technical advisor!

That would be a terrible situation for a company public relations rep to handle. Will have to look for the book at my local library branch, which is full to the rafters with patrons most days.

Thanks for the info. We are Longmire TV fans but have not read any of the books. Maybe it's time to do that!

Haven't read any of the books yet, but love the series. Too bad this is the last season of the show, and in one more week it will be released.

As good as the series is, books are way better.

So what's the title of the new book? There have been rumblings of a full length feature movie now that this is the last season. Maybe they could incorporate 2926 in it since they film all of it in and around Last Vegas, NM. A guy can dream, can't he?

Yeah, that's a brilliant idea. A Santa Fe engine in a movie about murder on a train pulled by a UP engine.

Who gets to wail the loudest about authenticity?

Hollywood takes artistic license all the time, lol. ATSF engine, ATSF train.

FWIW, and in case anyone cares and agrees with me --
I very much hope that they never, ever make a movie
about a murder on any train, and especially not on
a train pulled by one of the steam locomotives that
now run or will run soon. The steam locomotive
preservation industry does NOT need THAT! We do
not need anyone to associate any locomotives with
murder, especially NOT steam locomotives.

And, as one of the "Star Wars" movies showed,
Hollywood no longer needs real things to make
movies. Jar-Jar Binks was 100% compute-generated;
there was absolutely nothing there when the scenes
he was in were filmed. So -- why would Hollywood
spend the money and time using a real steam
locomotive when they can get people to create exactly
what they want and need by using fancy computer
programs?

I just hope no group ever agrees to let Hollywood
use their locomotive(s) for anything negative.

Just my 2 cents, and, as always, YMMV, and probably does.

I received "The Western Star" as a Christmas gift from my wife and finished it up on New Year's Day. Great read. Now to start collecting and reading the rest of Craig Johnson's Longmire novels.

I only suggested the use of 2926 because all of the Longmire TV shows have been filmed in Northern NM right in the 2926 group's backyard. All of the production has historically been in and around Albuquerque and Las Vegas, NM. Sure, the actual 844 would be the spot on engine to use but I'm not so sure UP would be up for that. Anywho, it's all conjecture and pie in the any talk anyways.

Night,

TG
