It's always this crowded. The passenger cars are going to Antonito for the winter where they will be serviced but the freight cars remain as they have for years. The cars stored there have been there since the RR's founding in 1970 when they came over from Alamosa before the D&RGW line was severed. Included in the collection are the rider boxcars which were the first converted for passenger use (imagine school plastic chairs bolted to the floor with plexiglass windows and clear plastic curtains), gondola and ballast cars with wood rotting, and cattle/sheep boxcars. Over the years the Friends have restored many for operation on photo freights but a lot are left for future possible reconstruction. For a complete list of cars in the Chama and Antonito yards, see the below link with photos of most cars. Be prepared to spend some time looking at this extensive historic narrow gauge car collection which is the largest such collection in the US if not the world. https://www.cumbrestoltec.org/php/assets/fctsrr.php?category=rollingStock Edited 3 time(s).
