Tremendous Steam news that has been overlooked
Author: PlyWoody

The attached photo will never happen again but the Cog RR will be twice as good next year and that story has failed to be covered. The Cog completed a new transfer table switch at the Summit in August 2017 and that permitted the arrangement of trains and the operation of a second steam train each day. And the Cog RR just announced that the 2018 operating season will have two steam trains running each day for a 100% increase in steam operation. Don't forget that the WW&F is rebuilding one locomotive and also building an entire new locomotive, and over at Portland they expects to have the large SR&RL #7 in operation. Plus up at Philips, real steam is running their trains next year. Things are looking good in New England. Up Cog trains approach passing down trains at Skyline switch.

Edit to add new improvement that is also happening. The base shop has built a new coach and it will be smoother and give a more comfortable ride. They started the second train in August 2017 and it was quite popular. They are continuing to upgrade the 3.33 mile line with steel trestles replacing the wood. This is the last railroad in America which had the remains of the first generation wood rail that first had flat bar rail that was replaced by just adding the present 25# “T” rail. Now the plans are to replace the 25# with used 100# per yard “T” rail. The gage had been hard to determine but most reports say it is narrow gauge by one inch less than standard gauge.
The railway this summer operated 31 trains each 10-hour day and had an uphill capacity of 2,144 persons per day. A normal day would see 1000 rider and employs 80 workers. The owner adds that more changes and improvements are in the future. Several of the old steam engines are set up on display with its coach, one at Base Station road in Fabyan and one at Twin Mountain main highway junction, and they are kept in proper display. The one put up on eBay for sale never sold.

Great news! I much prefer the smell of coal smoke to the smell of french fries.

For any of you fans that haven't ridden this line, by all means do so. Bring non-railfans with you, the ride is that good. (And bring a knit hat--the only kind you can keep on your head at the summit)

If you look at the Post Card photo it is titled Busy Day at Mt. Washington Cog Ry. The only other Cog is Pike Peak, Colorado and that is not in New England.

Thanks for the news! With so much new happening up there maybe I'll go there, and to Maine, in 2018?!

Gentlemen, I read and comprehend quite well. What I did not see was the writing of the post card, which I am sorry for. Geez, give a old man a break.

Thanks so much or the good news about the Mount Washington
Dog Railway. SO glad to see them doing so well, and that they
will have TWO steam locomotive operating most days. And they
had to replace that old wooden trestle, after the damage it got
in the recent storms. Well done, folks!
