When You Run Locomotives Inside Buildings You Need This Sign!
Author: LoggerHogger

Operating steam locomotives pose enough dangers from the cinders and fire they carry with them without having them pull their trains through wooden buildings!

Until the early 1960's the Howard Terminal Railroad of Oakland, California ran steam in the form of 2-6-2T #6. This engine was former Sierra Ry 2-6-2 #30, having been built for the Angels Branch on the Sierra.

Throughout her years on the Howard Terminal Railroad #6 spent part of her days pulling railcars through the wooden dockside warehouses on the Oakland piers. Care had to exercised in firing the engines during the time they passed through these flammable structures.

Maybe the sign we see here helped remind the crews of the danger.

Was the cab door on the fireman side in the front of the cab also?

Luke,

No, on the fireman's side the cab door is in the normal positions at the rear of the cab. We see the fireman's side in this fine 1958 view taken by Harre Demoro.

If the locomotive were an oil-burner, their wouldn't be cinders or much fire danger from the locomotive itself. Now, as to the "smoking". . .

While oil burners have less risk of spitting out cinders than wood or coal burners, they still do throw out some sparks. You will see a variety of spark arrestors used on oil burning steam locomotives.

Here are 3 examples of spark arrestors on oil-burning steam locomotives.

Steve- I’m not Martin, but the first one is Kinzua Pine Mills, Kinzua, Oregon; second might be Sekiu, Washington; and the third looks like J. Niels in Klickitat, Washington. Corrections are always welcome.

Picture two show the old school turn signal on the truck on the right. The driver pulls a cord and the signal pulls out.

Why wouldn't Howard Terminal install spark arrestors if it was a significant fire danger?

At the slow speeds the ran through the buildings with only one or 2 cars, they would not be working hard enough there to pose mush of a threat.

Martin, glad to see you put a Willamette between those two Shays, one of our favorites, Rayonier No. 2.

Interesting point for those too young to have known. The first car my parents owned equipped with turn signals was a 1951 Oldsmobile. I was fascinated. Maybe because they reminded me of a Lionel product with levers and colored lights?
