Nice shot.On my railroad (Seaboard Air Line) that would be a Mountain.
The SAL locomotives had Vanderbilt tenders as well. With a few changes
this would look like SAL.

One of just a couple classes of GN locomotive built with radial-stay fireboxes rather than Belpaire fireboxes that GN favored, this is one of the P-2 Mountains. There was an earlier class (P-1'S?) rebuilt into 2-10-2's that were built with Belpaires. Interestingly the first class of Northerns, the S-1's were also built with Belpaires, later S-2's with radial stay fireboxes as well. The Challengers GN operated were radial-stayed,but were actually from an SP&S order...Cool photo!

I always like to stop and admire her sister 2507 in Wishram, WA when I'm passing through the area with time to spare.

Pretty tough to see in that coffin they built around it.

On the UP the 4-8-2's were designated the Mountain class as well.
The Harriman code on the cabs indicated them as MT's.

And on the New York Central they were called Mohawks, named for the river along which many ran.

A county commisioner once said it was built that way so people would be more tempted to get out of their cars and go look at it. Other sources say it was built that way because after they realized it wouldn't produce revenue, they realized they could save several thousand dollars by not building it so tall. I'm just glad Klickitat County bothered to get her back and on covered display instead of letting her go the way of the Goldendale Branch. Wishram doesn't have a wholenlot going for it, but they do take pride in their little Train Park.
