When The Coal Burning Product Of This Engine Hits Winter Air!
Author: LoggerHogger

The steam produced from the heat of a locomotives firebox creates quite a show any time of year. However, it is winter time that the show becomes extraordinary!

Stan Kistler proved this point eloquently in November 1956 when he traveled to Sherman Hill, Wyoming to capture the winter spectacle of Union Pacific's Big Boys in action. Here we see one of the 4000's showing us what volumes of hot steam hitting freezing clear air will do.

Awesome!

Stan captured a very awesome photo of the power and majesty of a steam locomotive using the bitter winter to accentuate all the steam escaping from the locomotive.

That is a spectacular and gorgeous and stunning photo!! Stan Kistler really hit it outta the park and into next week with this one. And -- brrrrrrr!!!!!! Looks VERY cold out there!

I also noticed the pole line -- which goes on top of the cut, and one pole is even on the slope and has some kind of support at the top. (Musta been real fun digging the hole for THAT one!)

Thank you very, very much, Martin, for posting this beautiful photo. What a gem!

Agreed. Mr. Kistler must have been shivering pretty well as it looks like the wind was blowing hard that day.

Outstanding Classic Martin! Could you imagine being there at this moment, with your camera, and trying to concentrate on the viewfinder, versus real eye view at the same time, plus suffering the weather elements? This is truly the moment of the Power and The Majesty of Steam, Captured for us by Stan! Truly Andrellelan rush moment for the photographer at the time! Also looks like the wind on the hill is blowing the steam plume back away from camera view.
