Well behaved photo-line for the 765 on the TPW!
Author: slacks

After to many jerks on photo-lines for both steam and diesel runbys, its refreshing to be in a line that was well behaved. This was the setup for the runby in 1980 on the TPW. This is the Sunday trip that went east from Peoria Ill. The first photo is the crew setting up the runby and a few fans still getting into place. Then 765 starts the runby and everyone stays in place no jerks jumping out and a good photo shot! Good trip even on the coach fare. Doe,s anyone remember this what town this was? THANKS.

I live about an two and a half hours south of Peoria, neat to see where she started her second life.

This is just a guess, but judging by the lack of any trees, shrubs and buildings near the tracks, I will say it is Crescent City. The water tower looks like the one in Crescent City as well and the fact that the town name has been painted out would indicate the town is not too proud of the disaster that put their town in the public eye.

I was out there for these 765 trips. To say it was an awesome time would be an understatement.

This was Secor, IL. The 765 was pointed east and this was her first public excursion to Watseka, and Effner, IL. The city water tower has been replaced but the street and track arrangement hasn't changed. May, 1980. The following day, a Sunday, the excursion went west to LaHarpe, IL. The 765 cut off, wyed, serviced and laid over until the diesels brought the excursion train back from Keokuk, Iowa in a 10 mph death march. The guest whistle that weekend was Tom Stephen's N&W hooter whistle and it put out a haunting sound over the wide river bridge at Peoria after dark. Doyle McCormack came out to run the 765 part of the time to help the new crew keep their feet on the ground, er - rails.

BTW, the 10 mph death march was due to track conditions between Keokuck and LaHarpe - pulled by the TP&W diesels. Between LaHarpe and E. Peoria and Logansport the TP&W was mostly a 49 mph railroad at that time.

Crescent City doesn't have a concrete elevator.

Compare this photo of 765 on the same trackage in 2009: https://flic.kr/p/e7a7NV

That would have been the 100 degree temperatures!
