Steam & Excursion > AFT/SP 4449- Having It Both Ways, or: You Only Live Twice

I got a letter today....

He there, here's a few for the steam pool. The 4449 was in Portland in 1977 at the end of the transcon trip from Floriduh. Larry and myself made this out of plastic that was from an actual photo of the logo blown up on a wall to proper size. It had magnets glued to the back and rode on the inside cab wall of my truck. We stuck it on the next morning, quickly took pics and removed it before anyone else showed up. Only 2 sets of these pics exist.

Got to admit,,,,,,,,THAT is pretty cool!

Yeah, it kinda is.  I remember Dale & Larry being rather secretive about this at the time.  I saw the logos briefly, but not on the "49 as shown- or I'd sure as hell have pictures of it too!

Having made the whole trip, from Birmingham, I must admit that I do not remember a "Dale, nor a "Larry".

I don't think either rode the excursion.  Both were AFT employees.  Dale and I were in operations and lived aboard, Larry was in Security,  We all joined the AFT in Jan 76 and stayed all the way to Miami.  Our little claim to fame was that the three of us were pretty much the only railfans (outside the two engine crews, of course) among the AFT's 70 or so employees.  (The AFT was NOT a railfan organization-  it was mostly college kids up for an adventure)   Anyway, you'd have had pretty limited contact with any of us.

TO member Tommy joined the AFT towards the end and became the 4th Foamer-On-Board.

I have a print of that photo also,courtesy of SP4360 from oh so many years ago!

Great photos ! I was living in Los Angeles area at that time and she came thru late at night , did not know they were coming, heard the whistle and ran outside , we were only a block away, saw people chasing her on both sides of the street! Wow !

What you're probably remembering is the AFT itself.  Santa Barbara to Long Beach to Anaheim to San Diego to SJC to Yuma were all night moves in Jan 1976.
This Return to Portland trip in 1977 was all daytime running.
