Black Butte, 1984 New Orleans Worlds Fair Daylight. The late Richard P. Yager taking water, while we wait for the diesel helper/helpers to dynamic brake us down the 2.2% to Dunsmuir.

Anyone have an idea of how many GPM a standpipe like this puts out? How fast can you fill the tender?
It's too bad that the Black Butte pipe is gone. Bad luck that the Amtrak train took it out.

Having taken water many, many, may times from fire hydrants all over the midwest, southwest, and west, I can't ever recall a flow exceeded 500GPM through a 2 1/2 inch fire hose. However, that original "steam era" water column would deliver at least 1500 to 2000 GPM, what with the pressure head from the nearby water tank, not to mention the large diameter of the vertical column.

It took only a few minutes to overflow the tender.
