Jim Thorpe's "Winterfest" excursion
Author: Pattenburg

With Saturday morning calling for sunny skies before the clouds moved in, I decided to head up to Jim Thorpe (PA) to photograph the first of Winterfest's three excursions before the skies clouded up. With RBMN 2535 leading the way that first excursion is seen here crossing over the Lehigh River near the Glen Onoko Trail parking area. Judging from the view on this overlook, the coaches looked like they were full. Reading & Northern caboose 92844 brought up the rear markers. Sunday's landscape will be covered with snow as three to five inches is forecasted to fall.

Nice. With all the exhaust smoke your shot qualifies for both "steam" as well as excursion entry. (LOL)

Boy, you got THAT right! Something seriously wrong with THAT unit.

Let's see: Tourist Railroad, Winter operation, first trip of the day, and outdoor storage. All those things would lead me to believe the unit had been idling for quite a while and was clearing itself out. I'm not an expert, but that's fairly common on every diesel I've seen...

Those GP30s I think have smart-start in them. Might have something to do with the turbo, as every GP30 I've ran on multiple railroads has been smokey.

Well, "smokey", as in dark gray, is one thing, but that light blue color smoke is NOT a good sign, whether the engine is cold or not.
