Lerro Productions photo charter. Ran today and will run tomorrow to Summerville. Not a film, but I'm sure there are several videographers on the trip.

So... how is a bunch of videographers that are "filming" a "photo freight" more than likely for the purposes of producing a commercial product for sale not a film? I'm just asking...

It's video. Not a frame of film involved.

Common Guys... nobody uses "Film" anymore including the big budgets. You guys really had to rain on this guys parade with freakin technicalities. Why can't the discussion be how great the double header is instead of vomiting up correction all over the poor op? Seriously why can't we just enjoy the hobby without making every thread a discussion about who is right... who cares... two steam engines and freight cars in 2018!

Not all who attend the charters are specifically video people, I've been on a charter or two where participants simply bring along a tripod and video camera to capture the action while focusing on photography. A lot of times a single charter won't provide enough video to produce a commercial product most would be willing to pay for. Thankfully many who attend these charters will post compilations of clips from the charter for others enjoyment here on TO and other sites like FB and YT, myself included when I attend a charter.

Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but when I hear you say "Film Crew" I think of a professional firm shooting a few railroad related scenes for a larger motion picture, with a director, and actors, where the train is not the main subject of the film, but rather usually just a plot device.

More info on this specific charter by Mr. Lerro can be found here - http://www.lerrophotography.com/workshop-tour/7557/

I remember taking note that this charter was in the works, but since I knew I wouldn't have the time or funds to take part. Maybe one of these days. The Summerville trips are always a blast, whether one engine or two, but it would be great to get 'em both on freight!

I got lucky when they tied some freight cars behind 401 at Monticello when they were testing some work that had been completed. I can't say they didn't tie the cars on rather than just run it light because they knew "unofficial official videographer" was on site.

A bit OT perhaps, but a few movies are still photographed on film. However none of the film is projected in the theaters. All projection is digital.

15 Cannes Film Festival Movies Were Shot on Film, Including ‘The Beguiled’

Top directors like Sofia Coppola, Todd Haynes, Noah Baumbach, Yorgos Lanthimos, and the Safdie brothers shot on celluloid.

I don't know. I'm fairly common. Well, not spectacular anyway.

Oh, yes. I remember quite well. And again at the location of the long gone "photographers bridge" at the end of Blue Ridge Springs Road to catch 611 on Blue Ridge Grade. Always fun to hang out with one of the TO crowd!

I actually shot my first steam locomotive on Super 8mm movie film... and the camera's drive train self destructed days later. As for the movie projector, when it died the bang and shower of sparks was quite spectacular!

As for my earlier comment that was intended to be humorous and tongue in cheek... unfortunately, at least in my case on a few occasions, what I type in jest (and am laughing as I write) comes off differently than intended. Seeing it in black and white loses something in translation.

Film, tape, video - who cares? I still dial a phone number.

The word "filming" gets the point across, and sounds/reads better than the word "videoing" or "video-ing"!?!

And with the advent of cameras that record straight to a hard drive or SD card, even the term "videotaping" can be obsolete... though not in my case. I'm behind the times on that one.

I guess when I get my next generation of camera gear, that will put me in the SD card category. Which, come to think of it, means that when I get the urge to go out with a video camera I will be in a "chipper" mood!

60 people in a film crew? Has the original poster never heard of a photo charter. BTW, I still use tape in my video camera but would probably say I am "filming." Regardless, thanks to Pete Lerro for a great two days.

Have you ever seen a film crew?

Depends on the budget!

I once had to work three cameras, sound gear and a twelve foot camera crane unassisted.... no budget for help. For some reason, I was sore at the end of the day. LOL
