More Lousy Weather... and hauling pigs with a 2-4-2
Author: MaryMcPherson

Here are a couple of shots of Crab Orchard & Egyptian 2-4-2 #5 hauling a piggyback train from Ordill to Marion, Illinois, on February 3, 1979.

#5 was the railroad's first locomotive, and handled their first tourist trains on Memorial Day, 1973, when she was still a 2-4-2T. The 1946 Porter was rebuilt with a tender as seen here over the winter of 1973-74, and was only months away from retirement in these scenes. By summer, she would be replaced by 2-8-0 #17.

I like that little engine.
Suddenly I am again 6 years old and at the throttle of my own 2-4-2, made by Marx in 027 gauge of course.

Think how few saw her in operation, but through these photos, we can take a trip into history.
Thanks for posting these.

No, but not much better. She's done unless someone involved wins the Powerball.

#5 was retired by the CO&E in the fall of 1979, and sat next to the enginehouse in Marion until early 1985. Then she was bought by the folks starting the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern in Jackson, Missouri, in April, 1985. She began running in Jackson in 1986, and remained under steam there until 2000.

After she was parked and in need of serious work to meet the current Federal regulations, she was not looked after as she should have been. One of the folks decided she needed a new cab, and cut the old one to pieces. The top of the steam dome was removed, and the lack of a good seal on the boiler (the hole atop the dome just had something put over it and weighed down) let moisture in.

Recently she was given an untrasound and the damage had been done. The boiler flunked. She's in pieces now, and needing a new boiler.

Just as I started to build up steam I saw that you were grinning so now I am too. The first old Marx is said to have never done a day’s work in his life despite claiming to be an expert on workers. The later Marx from New York knew how to build and sell trains but did not care much how long they were useable. My old 2-4-2 did not last in service nearly as long as the one you presented here!

The thing that replaced it was years newer than what you could have found on the used diesel market. At least there
was a camera around for this, missed the days when the Yolo Shortline ran to town with ex-SP 0-6-0 and the carloads
of tomato products.

A little trivia about #5:

Leaving the factory floor in 1946, she was the last 2-4-2T Porter ever built. The locomotive that replaced her was six years her senior, built by the Canadian Locomotive Company in 1940.

By the way, I am a proud Marxist. I find Groucho to be particularly hilarious!

And do not forget that Harpo Marx was a railfan and had a large Lionel railroad. wag216

I stand corrected, thought the CLC Consol was built in like 1948.

Yup. CLC 1940, construction number 1959.
