Steam & Excursion > UP 8444 & 3985 doubleheading out of Cheyenne - 1981Date: 03/15/18 08:03 UP 8444 & 3985 doubleheading out of Cheyenne - 1981 Author: spdaylight Have seen some recent posts of the doubleheader which motivated me to dig into my video files.
Back in 1981, I chased this doubleheader from Cheyenne to SLC and then flew to Sacramento and drove to Dunsmuir to chase 4449, both on their way to the grand opening of the Rail Museum in Sacramento. I have finally started to work on a DVD on both chases. Here are a few clips of the doubleheader WB out of Cheyenne. I am unsure of the two location shoots after Sherman Hill . . any ID assistance (Bob3985?)would be appreciated. One of my more memorable moments was chasing out of Cheyenne and the Wyoming Highway Patrol decided to lead the pack down the interstate by traveling down the centre line at 55 MPH (the speed limit back then) and guys on their CB radios telling anyone to pass the officer and we will pay the ticket as we all watch the train speed out of sight! Anyway I still like the video from Video Rails when they just left Cheyenne and a lot of people got up early to see it, that was awesome in itself!

You may want to go back and reread EXACTLY what the original posted typed about any speeding tickets. The Highway Patrol sure as hell did NOT "pay for any speeding tickets". Especially like the tunnel steam/smoke as the train exits the tunnel, and how it is caught inside those gondola cars!
Nice with a caboose too. I see a coal tender on 3985, and coal in the first gondola car. Jim Baker Riverside, CA Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 03/15/18 15:57 by RailRat. Date: 03/15/18 15:58 Re: UP 8444 & 3985 doubleheading out of Cheyenne - 1981 Author: HotWater RailRat Wrote:

Second cut looked like between Bosler and Lookout, third would have been Fort Steele and the last I am not sure of but maybe somewhere around Rawlins. By the way that trip was fired by the mechanical department employees from the Omaha offices.

IIRC, the stairs were made of wood, so the car WAS carrying lumber! Date: 03/16/18 10:41 Re: UP 8444 & 3985 doubleheading out of Cheyenne - 1981 Author: switchlock Classic stuff, that!
