It Must Have Been Lonely Being The Last One In The Roundhouse!
Author: LoggerHogger

The multitude of empty stalls tells a grim reality as does the diesel in the next stall. The lone steam locomotive in a roundhouse that once held so many steam-powered stable mates make even this one look out of place.

The date is New Years Eve in 1957 and the place is Southern Pacific's San Jose, California roundhouse. SP #2475 will be pulling one of her very last trips later that night and the next day. Here career is nearly over.

All too soon, not even one stall of this once busy roundhouse will be occupied by steam. That will be a sad day.

Of all the images I have seen of the San Jose Roundhouse, never from this angle. Thanks for sharing.

The Central Coast Railway Club sponsored two excursions out of San Jose on Dec. 31, 1957 and Jan. 1, 1958, respectively, using #2475. The trips were called "Holiday with Steam."

The Dec. 31, 1957 excursion was a nighttime run to Monterey on the Monterey Branch. The train returned to San Jose after midnight.

The Jan. 1, 1958 excursion went to Tracy. Photos of this train can be found at: https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,2890146
