First, UP 844 is ALREADY in Wyoming, as the UP steam operation is headquartered in Cheyenne.

Second, UP 844 will reportedly NOT be operating during 2018, except for the annual Denver Post Cheyenne Frontier Days Special, in July.

Which may be the last Post special to Frontier Days.
The paper is in deep financial doo-doo.

It will run in late July.

All is not lost. The paper supposedly being in shaky financial condition does not necessarily mean that it will fold (<G>) and go away, and that no one will buy it, and that any such buyer would not continue to run the Cheyenne Frontier Days Train.

And please remember -- the Frontier Days train did stop operating after the 1970 train ran, but was brought back in 1992 as part of the Denver Post's centennial celebration. It next ran in 1994, and has been an annual event ever since then.

This train first ran in 1908, so there is a lot of tradition going for it. It also raises a lot of money for a number of Denver-area charities.

So -- there is reason for hope.

Ok guys, I have been given permission to let the Cat out of the bag. The Union Pacific Museum will run a fundraiser one way from Denver to Cheyenne the day after the Denver Post trip. And yes the power will be 844.
As per the last trip the Museum sponsored, tickets will first be offered the Museum Patrons Members. As the event nears, Information will be posted on the website www.uprrmuseum.org and the information to become a "Patron" member.

If they are laying off people right and left as they
are now, what makes you think they want to spend money
on a train? The last thing hedge funds care about
is tradition.

Have you seen the POST lately? It's a mere shadow of
it's former self. Fewer pages, fewer sections, etc.
It turned hard left long before the hedge fund bought it
and that hasn't helped.

I'd say that process at other newspapers around the country has dramatically sped up the decline of newspapers.
I'm on a computer all day for work and it is still nice to sit down with a print newspaper in your hands and read it. The suicidal liberal slant of my own hometown newspaper has led me to the edge many times of making the call to cancel, but haven't made the call yet. It will come soon.

Much of the print media, regardless of political slant, or even if there is no political slant, is struggling these days. I reject the idea that a newspaper allegedly turning left or "hard left" is a factor leading to its demise.

The very conservative Pittsburgh-Tribune Review ceased publishing hard copy editions over a year ago. The Pittsburgh Post Gazette has become much more conservative over the past ten years and has been continually reducing its editorial content while raising its prices.

Print media is starved for advertising and it isn't getting better. Millennials
don't read print "anything" so unless a "sugar daddy" like Jeff Bezos buys
a newspaper and doesn't car about profit then goodbye print media... Most print
media has an online subscription just to stay in business.....

I did not know the Denver Post had been bought by a hedge fund. That is always very bad for any business any hedge fund buys, because no hedge fund execs ever give a rip about the businesses their fund buys.

And, no, I have not seen the Denver Post in a long time, so I did not know it is a mere shadow of its former self. That is sad. And is the sad result not of whatever political slant a newspaper may have, but is the result of those same newspapers giving away their product -- the news -- for free on the internet for the past 20 years. And even if a particular newspaper did not even have a website, other news outlets were on the web, giving away the news for free, at least until recently, when a number of news outlet have gone behind paywalls.

The hard fact is that ads pay for at least 2/3 of the cost of running a newspaper, if not more. Subscribes pay for the other 1/3. And ad-blocking software is therefore a big problem for all news organizations.

It always has been the Denver Post Charities that has run the Frontier Days Special since their reentry in the 1990's.
And it will be interesting to see how well the UP Museum does with ticket sales considering the distance between Council Bluffs and Denver. I wish them much success.

Perhaps the Cheyenne museum and the rocky club will be invited to participate too, UP has been wanting to charge the deadhead from CB costs lately to sunday's run if I understand correctly, last few years, why there hasn't been

sunday's trip open to the public. Be cool to ride to omaha, auction the biz car rides!

While all print media is struggling, newspapers are hit particularly. As for political slant, a content analysis would prove that a majority of media including print, broadcast, and internet are slanted to the left. We are blessed in Detroit to still have two daily newspapers, with opposite political slant. So if you still like the feel of paper in your hands (or even the on line version) you aren't stuck with reading all the left wing, anti Trump, anti concervative crap if you don't want to.

Which "Jack" are you referring to? I didn't post anything about the "Rocky Club".

Jack, I stand corrected as my tired eyes read the name wrong. I apologize as I am so used to seeing your posts here on this forum that I just thought of you. That is not meant in a bad way.

So sorry, "train671", but you are wrong about millennials. The article I linked to below states: "6% of 18- to 29-year-olds read books in digital formats only, compared with 7% of 30- to 49-year-olds and 5% of those 50 and older."

I learned this when I found an article when I Googled "What demographics are buying printed books?". One of the hits was this interesting and informative article, dated Sept. 1, 2016, which is based on research done by the Pew Institute since 2011 on the demographics of Americans who read books:

http://www.pewinternet.org/2016/09/01/book-reading-2016/

The article goes on to state that "Young adults – 80% of 18- to 29-year-olds have read a book in the last year" and "72% [of young adults 18 to 29-years old] have read a print book in the last year, compared to 61% of seniors."

Yes, this research was asking only about book-reading, ad not about reading in general, but I think it proves my point. Most millennials do, after all, read printed things. :)

The general fact still remains that newspapers made a very bad business decision when they decided to give away their product for free on the internet for a long time. And now they are paying dearly for that decision. And their political slant, whatever it is or was, has absolutely nothing to do with it.
