UP Steam Shop Tour Today
Author: ut-1

For the second consecutive year, I attended Union Pacific's Steam Shop tour in Cheyenne.

This year was a marked contrast to last as a lot of work activity was occurring today.

Here are some photos.

Thanks for sharing your Steam Shop visit. Glad the rain and 40-degree temperatures didn't stop you. Glad to see they were making progress during your visit May 19, 2018 at Cheyenne, WY.

All nice photos. Isn't the last photo the frame of the trailing truck that goes under the cab, rather than the lead or pilot truck ?

You comment about the trailing truck might be correct. Thanks for your astute observation.

I love seeing all the huge castings that go into a steam locomotive. When they are painted gray, all the details seem to be more visible. I would have enjoyed seeing all the patterns that were in many cases, carved or machined out of wood, and pieced together, for casting these parts. I can't remember who posted them , but there were some builders photos of the frames of several large locomotives. Really interesting. It also made me wonder what they would do if they found a flaw in their completed casting ? Could they be repaired, or would they just have to cut it up, and start over ? I hope I live long enough to see the new Pennsy T-1 frame and completion of the whole locomotive. That has to be a really long, one piece frame.

Depending on the extent of the damage, they can be
repaired using proper procedures.
